Celebrate National Pollinator Week, June 15 - 21, 2015! 6/15/15 7 pm The Broward Lotus Sangha Invites you to Celebrate
National Pollinator Week
June 15 - 21, 2015
http://www.meetup.com/LotusSangha/events/222466837/

Insects such as bees, butterflies, moths and beetles, as well as birds, bats and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food we eat. Unfortunately scientific evidence points to the fact that many pollinators are in trouble. Some species have seen a 90% decline in their populations over the last decade. In the United States alone, bees have declined from 4.5 million in 1945, to about 2 million. Without the actions of pollinators our food supply, agricultural economies, and surrounding landscapes would collapse. The celebration of Pollinator Week started in 2007, when the U.S. Senate designated National Pollinator Week in Resolution 580 to educate the public and help bring attention to the plight of pollinators worldwide.

The good news is that we can help make a difference by taking some simple steps.

Are you providing good habitat for pollinators in your home (balcony, window box, or yard)? Below are some simple things you can do at home to encourage pollinator diversity and abundance:

HOW WE CAN HELP:

• Plant a Pollinator Garden

• Build a Bee Block

• Avoid or Limit Pesticide Use

• Plant Native Larval Host Plants and the Butterflies They Attract

• Certify Your Garden! Yard Certification Programs

• Learn more about pollinators by visiting these interactive links: The Broward County Butterfly Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association, the North American Butterfly Association (NABA), The Xerces Society, Fish & Wildlife Pollinators Page

• Watch Dr. Marla Spivak's TED talk, explaining the role of bees in our ecosystem and food supply, the dramatic drop in bee populations and what we can do to help bees and other pollinators: “We need to behave more like a bee society, where each of our small actions can contribute to a grand solution,” says Spivak. “Let planting (pesticide free) flowers be the driver of large-scale change.”

• Download a variety of resources about pollinators and what you can do to help pollinators at The Pollinator Partnership

• Learn how to help the Monarch Butterflies that live right here in South Florida

• Take Action: Let's campaign to have a wide variety of flowers planted in community gardens and on roadsides, and to have flower borders planted around schools, housing developments, malls, and farms.

Peace is every step we take on this beautiful Earth

Pollinator Party at the Honolulu Zoo
6/20/2015 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
In Hawaii, the event has been commemorated by the signing of a proclamation in Recognition of Pollinator Week by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor (see attached 2012 first signing). This year, Ms. Danielle Downey, head of the Hawaii State Apiary Program has already requested for the Governor to confirm the proclamation in June 2015.

This important week is celebrated nationally by non-profit and educational organizations with family-friendly activities and events designed to raise the awareness of the general public about the importance of our pollinators.

We will be setting up an educational booth at the Honolulu Zoo on Saturday June 20, 2015 to commemorate Pollinator Week 2015. The booth will provide information about pollinators, including native bees and birds, urban bees, flies, and butterflies that visit local gardens and help pollinate our crops. In the booth we will have short videos running, provide hands on activities (some observational, some games), display cases and beekeeping equipment for people to observe how honey is extracted. These activities will invite zoo visitors to learn about the importance of pollinators and what they can do to help with pollinator conservation.

Our team will include: The UH Honeybee Project team (based at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH Manoa). The team, led by Danielle Downey, of the State Apiary Program (Hawaii Department of Agriculture), Dr. Jason Graham, a researcher working on native bees (UH and DLNR), Dr. William Haines, a researcher at UH Manoa working with the conservation of the Kamehameha butterfly.

More than Flowers: Providing Nesting Habitats for Wild Bees from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

Pollinating insects can provide us with great value, but to receive this benefit, we have to provide them with habitat. In addition to providing nectar and pollen from flowers, many bees require nesting habitat. Join Iowa State University Associate Professor of Entomology Matt O’Neal for this workshop discussing the nesting habitat of wild bees and how this habitat can be provided in Iowa. Participation will include construction of a nest for stem-nesting bees.

Pollinator Fair! Saturday June 13th 12-4pm
Have you heard the buzz about National Pollinator Week? It starts June 15th-22nd and is designated as a week to celebrate, spread awareness and support our native pollinators. To kick off the week, Urban Roots will host a Pollinator Fair! Children and adults are invited to the farm for unBEElievably fun folk art activities including mead and soda brewing, lip balm and candle making and info sessions about native pollinators, basic beekeeping and the life cycle of a bee. We’ll also have a swarm of local organizations and beekeepers with crafts for sale and honey for tasting! Pollinators include more than just the well known honeybee. Birds, butterflies, bats, beetles and bees are all vital to our ecosystem on the farm and to agriculture in general. Without our pollinators, the delicate blossom will not mature into a juicy peach, pear or blackberry and make its way to our plate. Join us in celebrating our pollinators and their role in our food system. This event is free and open to the public! Sample honey drinks and take home your own beeswax candles and lip balm for a $5 suggested donation. Visit our website urgc.org to learn more about how Urban Roots builds healthy minds, bodies and communities in Northern Nevada and our Facebook (Urban Roots Garden Classrooms) to RSVP for the event!

If Not You Then Who June 1- July 1 In celebration of National Pollinator Week June 15-21 we are giving away FREE packets of Pollinator Mix all month long. Our Ohio Native Pollinator Mix contains 26 different varieties of Ohio native wildflowers and grasses. As an additional BONUS we are giving away an additional FREE packet of annual variety wildflowers for a boost of yearlong color!

Over 80% of our suburban and urban landscapes are planted with non-native plants. What does this mean to our native pollinators? Native pollinators and native plants have co-evolved over thousands of years and therefor depend on one another. In our urban/suburban landscapes it's as if the landscapes are barren in the eyes of the native pollinator. There are few if any native host plants on which to lay their eggs or for their caterpillars to feed on. When non-native plants replace natives such as we are seeing in suburbia, then the entire food web is disrupted by the loss of specialized plant eating insects such as pollinators and studies have shown that our native pollinators are in serious decline. Since pollinators are responsible for pollinating 75% of the world's flowering plants we know that makes them just as important as sunlight, soil and water. Turpin Farms along with The Sunflower Farm are urging you to help save the pollinators by planting pollinator habitats composed of native wildflowers and native grasses. Because after all...

IF NOT YOU THEN WHO?!

You can help end pollinator food deserts by planting our custom pollinator mix which is composed of 26 Ohio Native Perennial Wildflowers and grasses that provide both food and protection for our native pollinators. He proudly provides habitat for pollinators, other beneficial insects, and various other larger animals.

Irucka would like you to be able to provide this needed habitat too. Thus, he will be distributing free literature on pollinators and free pollinator conservation seeds from Roundstone Native Seed Company during his family's A Night to Remember: A Multi–generational Family Book Signing, Photo Exhibit and Presentations on Wednesday, 17 June 2015, from 6 PM – 8 PM at the West End United Methodist Church at 2200 West End Avenue, 37203 (across from Vanderbilt University). This event is occurring during Pollinator Week 2015.

In addition to providing the free information and seeds, Irucka will be selling postcards featuring pollinators, selling organic and/or heirloom starter seedlings, and he will be discussing his book, "Balancing the Rift: ReCONNECTualizing the Pasenture", which mentions making pollinator–friendly gardens and provides resources for learning more about pollinators.

Irucka has brought in other members of his talented family for this event. Some family authors will be signing and selling their books and providing a photo exhibit and spirited presentations.

We will have twin brothers Irucka (Nashville) and Obiora Embry (Lexington, KY); their mother, Dr. Deborah Mapp–Embry (Louisville, KY); their aunt, Ivy Barksdale (Lexington, KY); their father, Jim Embry (Richmond, KY) and their grandfather, James Mapp (Chattanooga) will read from and sign their books. Jim Embry will also exhibit photographs from his travels to Terra Madre and around Italy.

CLEAN THE CREEK CAMPAIGN is a grass-roots community environmental awareness program for communities and residents surrounding the W. Goodrich Jones State Forest. The Sweetleaf Nature Trail was established in 1952 and hundreds visit the trail each week. Due to outside pressures, trash, debris, and garbage pollute the stream and trail. Your help is needed to CLEAN THE CREEK and surrounding nature trail.

The trail is a wonderful place to also plant pollinator plants and seed for future birds, butterflies, and bees.

Bee Garden Bike Ride and Site Design Friday June 19th at 6 p.m. Join permaculture designers Claire Core and Jeffrey Adams for a bicycle-based tour of two Bee Inspired Gardens (BIG) in Moab, culminating in a community design activity at a proposed garden site. BIG is a collaborative effort promoting landscape practices that support diverse pollinators, are water-wise, and grow perennial edible foods. These principles and practices are readily applicable for everyone to become a part of the solution for a healthier watershed and community.

We will meet outside Moonflower Market and then proceed to the Moab Charter School and Utah State University which both have new pollinator gardens. At each site we will discuss a variety of permaculture design principles and ecological landscaping practices used to create each Bee Inspired Garden. Participants will learn techniques and see examples of water harvesting earthworks, perennial plant guilds, edible landscaping, regenerative soil management, and roof water catchment.

The bike tour will end at the vacant lot at the corner of Walnut and 100 West where we will engage in a design charette activity to apply what we have seen on the tour and create a conceptual design for the lot. Participants will gain experience in site assessment and design process that can applied to any landscape.

Bumblebee Jamboree June 13th, 2015 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Chesterfield County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will be participating in National and State Pollinator Weeks by hosting our fourth annual Bumblebee Jamboree at Maymont on June 13, 2015.

Bumblebee Jamboree is a free family-friendly event which aims to educate residents of the Greater Richmond Area on the importance of pollinators to our daily lives and what each of us can do in our own backyards to protect these natural resources. We have grown more than 10% per year since 2012 with more than 1,350 visitors last year.

In the United States, pollination by honey bees and other insects produces nearly $20 billion worth of products annually – they are a crucial link in the agricultural/horticultural economy of our country. Agriculture is a top industry in Virginia and the Governor has recognized pollinators’ contributions by proclamation each year.

The event will include educational displays and activities for both adults and children. Puppet shows, games, storytelling, and crafts will keep the little ones engaged and excited to learn. Information on pollinator plant selections, pollinator-friendly pest control options and a sampling station of pollinator-dependent foods will be offered for the adults. We’ll also have an enclosed honey bee observation hive and Virginia butterfly safari tent that all ages will enjoy visiting.

We sincerely hope you will join us in celebrating pollinators. Please be sure to stop by Bumblebee Jamboree with any little ones in your life – this will be a fun event for all!

BeeBlitz Sunday, June 21, 2015 - All Day Join us on Sunday, June 21, 2015 for the first annual BeeBlitz, taking place on the last day of National Pollinator Week!

All residents of Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio are invited to canvas their backyards and neighborhoods for bees, snap some pics, and upload them to BeeSpotter on Sunday, June 21st. The name BeeBlitz is derived from a BioBlitz, an activity in which all of the biodiversity in a specific area is examined, to provide a snapshot in time of the flora and fauna present. BeeSpotter wants to know what species of bees are seen, and where they are, on the 21st, which is also Father’s Day. BeeSpotter encourages veteran and aspiring bee spotters alike to take dear old dad on a nature walk and participate in the blitz.

We will also be partnering with parks, schools, museums, and zoos to offer local BeeBlitz events in as many communities as possible.

ReMediate.2 Pollinator Friendly Seed Quilt and Art Installation Saturday, June 20, 2015 2pm Pick up a needle and thread and join Guelph artist Christina Kingsbury on the former Eastivew Landfill site as she creates a large-scale quilt as a gesture of care for the landfill.

The quilt, which will expand past 1,000 square feet, is made of hand-made paper that includes discarded paper and plant material and is embedded with native seeds.

The ReMediate quilt is intended to become a living habitat for threatened pollinators, and this year will include a bee hotel sculpture with poetry installation.

The Closing Event will occur on June 20th at 2pm with poetry reading, public sewing, and presentation on pollination by York University urban ecologist Scott MacIvor. Pollination Guelph will also be on hand with resources to help you learn more about pollinators and what you can do to help.

ReMediate is a collaborative project between Christina Kingsbury and Guelph emerging poet Anna Bowen in conjunction with Pollination Guelph. Chapbooks of Anna Bowen's ReMediate poetry will be available at the public sewing events. The poetry explores the storied and layered history of the land.
