| Discovering Arizona's Bees! | Saturday, June 20, 10 am to noon | Following a cowboy breakfast, scientist and author Stephen Buchmann will join us and present an illustrated talk on the diversity of Arizona's bees from its southern deserts to the Ponderosa pine forests of the White Mountains. Come and find out how to identify your local bees. Steve will also give a hands on demonstration of how easy it is to make a "Bee Hotel" for leaf cutter and mason bees from scrap lumber. Unfortunately scientific evidence points to the fact that many pollinators are in trouble. Some species have seen a 90% decline in their populations over the last decade. In the United States alone, bees have declined from 4.5 million in 1945, to about 2 million. Without the actions of pollinators our food supply, agricultural economies, and surrounding landscapes would collapse. The celebration of Pollinator Week started in 2007, when the U.S. Senate designated National Pollinator Week in Resolution 580 to educate the public and help bring attention to the plight of pollinators worldwide. Celebrate "National Pollinator Week" with the UGA Marine Extension and GA Sea Grant at their upcoming coastal Georgia event. The university's EcoScapes Sustainable Landscaping Program and partners will host a free educational experience at the UGA Brunswick station and native plant demonstration garden from 9 am to noon on Thursday, June 18. The celebration will include tours of the pollinator habitat garden and other native plant themed gardens. In addition, EcoScapes will provide an 11 am presentation about pollinator protection and native plant pollinator-friendly landscaping practices as part of the local event's buzzing agenda. Come and learn more about the diversity of pollinators (including bees, birds, butterflies, beetles, bats, and other animals) and what we can do to protect them. In Hawaii, the event has been commemorated by the signing of a proclamation in Recognition of Pollinator Week by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor (see attached 2012 first signing). This year, Ms. Danielle Downey, head of the Hawaii State Apiary Program has already requested for the Governor to confirm the proclamation in June 2015. This important week is celebrated nationally by non-profit and educational organizations with family-friendly activities and events designed to raise the awareness of the general public about the importance of our pollinators. We will be setting up an educational booth at the Honolulu Zoo on Saturday June 20, 2015 to commemorate Pollinator Week 2015. The booth will provide information about pollinators, including native bees and birds, urban bees, flies, and butterflies that visit local gardens and help pollinate our crops. In the booth we will have short videos running, provide hands on activities (some observational, some games), display cases and beekeeping equipment for people to observe how honey is extracted. | Bee Garden Bike Ride and Site Design | Friday June 19th at 6 p.m. |
Join permaculture designers Claire Core and Jeffrey Adams for a bicycle-based tour of two Bee Inspired Gardens (BIG) in Moab, culminating in a community design activity at a proposed garden site. BIG is a collaborative effort promoting landscape practices that support diverse pollinators, are water-wise, and grow perennial edible foods. These principles and practices are readily applicable for everyone to become a part of the solution for a healthier watershed and community. We will meet outside Moonflower Market and then proceed to the Moab Charter School and Utah State University which both have new pollinator gardens. At each site we will discuss a variety of permaculture design principles and ecological landscaping practices used to create each Bee Inspired Garden. Participants will learn techniques and see examples of water harvesting earthworks, perennial plant guilds, edible landscaping, regenerative soil management, and roof water catchment. The bike tour will end at the vacant lot at the corner of Walnut and 100 West where we will engage in a design charette activity to apply what we have seen on the tour and create a conceptual design for the lot. Participants will gain experience in site assessment and design process that can applied to any landscape. |

Banshee Reeks is a 700+ Nature Preserve in the heart of Loudoun County, VA. It attracts more than 200 species of native pollinators and has been a site for research from the USGS, Smithsonian, and PhD students for years. This summer event is open to the public and features three dynamic workshops: Nature Photography, Beetles, and Invasive Species. In addition, there will be an open house, guided nature hikes, hayrides, local pollinator groups, and music by Snallygaster, a band of SI Scientist Musicians. Cost is 5 dollars per car. The Chesterfield County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will be participating in National and State Pollinator Weeks by hosting our fourth annual Bumblebee Jamboree at Maymont on June 13, 2015. Bumblebee Jamboree is a free family-friendly event which aims to educate residents of the Greater Richmond Area on the importance of pollinators to our daily lives and what each of us can do in our own backyards to protect these natural resources. We have grown more than 10% per year since 2012 with more than 1,350 visitors last year. In the United States, pollination by honey bees and other insects produces nearly $20 billion worth of products annually – they are a crucial link in the agricultural/horticultural economy of our country. Agriculture is a top industry in Virginia and the Governor has recognized pollinators’ contributions by proclamation each year. The event will include educational displays and activities for both adults and children. Puppet shows, games, storytelling, and crafts will keep the little ones engaged and excited to learn. Information on pollinator plant selections, pollinator-friendly pest control options and a sampling station of pollinator-dependent foods will be offered for the adults. We’ll also have an enclosed honey bee observation hive and Virginia butterfly safari tent that all ages will enjoy visiting. We sincerely hope you will join us in celebrating pollinators. Join us on Sunday, June 21, 2015 for the first annual BeeBlitz, taking place on the last day of National Pollinator Week! All residents of Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio are invited to canvas their backyards and neighborhoods for bees, snap some pics, and upload them to BeeSpotter on Sunday, June 21st. The name BeeBlitz is derived from a BioBlitz, an activity in which all of the biodiversity in a specific area is examined, to provide a snapshot in time of the flora and fauna present. BeeSpotter wants to know what species of bees are seen, and where they are, on the 21st, which is also Father’s Day. BeeSpotter encourages veteran and aspiring bee spotters alike to take dear old dad on a nature walk and participate in the blitz. We will also be partnering with parks, schools, museums, and zoos to offer local BeeBlitz events in as many communities as possible. |

This summer, Grouse Mountain is dedicated to doing our part to save British Columbia’s ‘Small Wonders’ through our on-mountain initiatives and education. Our programming will showcase of some of the smaller creatures in our environment and provide an interpretive exploration of pollination, marsh area species, plant propagation and more. A strong focus will be on the plight of bees. Visitors to Grouse Mountain will be able to visit The Hive Bee Interpretive Centre featuring a live beehive, stroll through our pollinator’s garden and take part in an interactive tour of our own 18 functioning hives. Small groups will get suited up and learn about species of bees, bee roles within colonies, challenges for bees, creating a friendly environment for bees, and the importance of bees to the food chain. |

Pick up a needle and thread and join Guelph artist Christina Kingsbury on the former Eastivew Landfill site as she creates a large-scale quilt as a gesture of care for the landfill. The quilt, which will expand past 1,000 square feet, is made of hand-made paper that includes discarded paper and plant material and is embedded with native seeds. The ReMediate quilt is intended to become a living habitat for threatened pollinators, and this year will include a bee hotel sculpture with poetry installation. The Closing Event will occur on June 20th at 2pm with poetry reading, public sewing, and presentation on pollination by York University urban ecologist Scott MacIvor. Pollination Guelph will also be on hand with resources to help you learn more about pollinators and what you can do to help. ReMediate is a collaborative project between Christina Kingsbury and Guelph emerging poet Anna Bowen in conjunction with Pollination Guelph. Chapbooks of Anna Bowen's ReMediate poetry will be available at the public sewing events. The poetry explores the storied and layered history of the land. |
